Taonga Aotearoa

This term's concept is Taonga Aotearoa. We have been learning about New Zealand's treasures, and ways that we can help protect them. On the wall you can see our beautiful artwork representing our role as environmentally conscious citizens. You can also see our writing, which is all about how we might help the Lorax save the earth.

Fractions

Here we are reinforcing wholes, halves and quarters using fairy bread. This was great fun for all. Thanks to Room 3 for the inspiration for this lesson, and to Room 8 for providing us with the bread, butter, jam and sprinkles!

We are very lucky to be surrounded by so many kind and helpful teachers! :)

Measurement madness

On Tuesday room 7 completed a measurement "treasure hunt". Working with a buddy we used our rulers to find objects around the classroom of a particular size. Once we found them we were then able to draw and write it onto our sheet.

Now that we know how to compare the length of objects it is important we begin to use units of measurement- like the centimetres on our rulers!

Matariki

Matariki is a special time of year, that we celebrate with learning. As part of our Matariki celebrations room 7 has made some woven stars. Aren't they gorgeous?

TUESDAY! Done and dusted..

Today has been a very eventful day! We started the day with room 4,  doing an experiment as part of this term’s concept. We mixed mentos and coke together and found out that it creates a fizzing overflow. Who would of thought?!

We then started our feathers for the korowai our school is making, and for writing we created big love hearts with little notes about cooperative learning on them. We are all part of one big team here in room 7!

What does it mean to be a principal?

video
What does a principal do? They are a bit like a teacher.. But we don't often see them in the classroom. We know that principals are very important but we have thinking about how they might spend their days..

Today room 7 engaged in some oral language activities focused on their current knowledge surrounding school principals. Then we wrote about what we think they do! Tomorrow we will talk about all the different things principals do and see how accurate our writing was.

Before we do that please take the time to check out our video! All these ideas are AMAZING!!
Please note you will have to turn off our blog's background music off to hear this video. The function for this is at the bottom of the page :)

Another block creation!

Look at what Jeremy, D'Angelo, VJ and Nikash created before school! A temple! How cool!
We talked about the temple's structure, and how they made it balance. There is so much we can learn, even before the bell goes!

A big thank you! It was a great treat after our reading session this morning.

Math Masterminds!

Here we are busy trying to solve Mother Bear's problem..

She needs to make some jackets for her 5 cubs. And each jacket needs to have 5 buttons... We are trying to solve how many buttons Mother Bear needs in total.

Solving problems like these takes a WHOLE lot of thinking! Luckily we know that drawing a few pictures, thinking aloud with our buddies and pulling out our skip counting skills will help us reach the final answer. :)

We are brrrrrr... BRILLIANT!

Experimenting with colours!

Earlier last week, Room 7 talked about all the different colours that we know!
We thought it would be a good idea, to make some predications about what colours we might be able to  make by mixing other colours together.

Some of us thought we could make green with purple and yellow. Others thought that maybe blue and black would do the trick...

After some mixing, we discovered that blue and yellow are the two colours we need to mix to make green. We also discovered that red and white makes mawhero. Further testing allowed us to conclude that the more white we mix with the red, the lighter the pink is!

Exciting stuff!!!

For those of you that haven't seen it...

If you haven't had a chance to pop into Room 7, then you won't have seen the pictures of our skittles experiment that we have displayed on our concept wall.

Nonetheless, I hope that your child has told you all about it. It was great fun!

We put skittles around the edge of a plate and poured warm water over it. Guess what happened?! All of the colour from the skittles came off the skittles themselves and formed a beautiful design in the water!

Most of us weren't expecting that! This science experiment was such a hit that we were able to write about it as well. All of us wrote instructions on how to do the experiment incase we ever need to tell our friends and whanau. :)

BOOKS!

Books are more interesting when they are jumbo size. Or so I have been told! (by the gorgeous Room 7 students)

Here is a photo of Gurleen, Jannatpreet and Ilham (left to right) reading big books during silent reading time.

Samoan Language Week

Wow! Samoan language week was such a success!

We started the week with the flag raising ceremony, and that same afternoon Room 7 had a visit from Miss Malietoa who taught us how to greet each other in Samoan.

We also met up with the rest of the junior school each day of the week to learn the song Savalivali which we performed as part of the Samoan language Week assembly!

Amongst all of this we even found the time to make Samoan flags to wave and support the other performers in the assembly :)

What great fun! Here's a photo of us wearing ula lole :)

The Gardener's Maze

After reading The Gardener's maze as a class, Room 7 drew pictures of their own maze and wrote about them. The fabulous VJ then created his own maze out of blocks! Check it out!!

This isn't the most recent photo from Term One, but this is such a beautiful photo it HAS to be shared..

This photo has perfectly captured the notion of Tuakana Teina, that Room 7 is working hard to embrace as part of our day to day learning.

Amazing things happen when the high frequency word cards come out! :P
Ka pai Tristan and Harkirat!

Well done Habeebah! All of us in Room 7 are very proud, and super lucky to have you in our class.

Excitement is in the air

The Room 7 and Room 8 teachers have got their thinking hats on this week.. busy gathering ideas for the last day of term!

We believe it is important to celebrate our successes as a team, and there is nothing better than having a celebration with our buddy class! :D

Stay tuned to find out what we get up to! Miss Sickels is feeling as excited as Spongebob is in this picture!

Swimming with Room 8 is always fun! Check the weekly homework sheet for our swimming days! They change weekly :)

Monday, March 13, 2017

Today in Room 7 we started a collaborative project as part of this term's concept- he waka eke noa. He waka eke noa means that we are all paddling in the same waka.. We are a team!

As a class we are creating a waka to display on the walls of the classroom. This display will represent our learning journey, and the fact that we always work together and look out for each other in Ruma Whitu.

We are very excited to complete this project and share it with you through this blog!

Click on the image to see it up close. We promise you will LOVE what you see!

At Papatoetoe South School I will be... Responsible!

Ruma Whitu is learning to stay seated when we eat our lunch. And you  know what? We are doing so well! Just look at us!

We understand that healthy foods are important because they are good for our brain and our body. Eating healthy also means that we will have the energy to learn LOTS.

Wow! Look at our delicious kai!

Being responsible at lunch time also means putting all our rubbish in the bin, eating our healthy food first and looking out for our classmates on the playground.

Our Maths Robots

Kia Ora,

During maths time we have been learning about shapes. There are many different shapes, they all have different names and some have more sides than others! We created our very own robots using a variety of shapes, then we created number stories to be displayed alongside them!

How many circles can you see in the photo? What about tapatoru (triangle)??
Amisha used a tapawha (square) for her robot's body. Isn't that a great idea?!

Stay tuned as next week our Mathematical frogs and lily pads will be displayed! We hope you are as excited as we are!

Nga mihi,
Ruma Whitu
